How to Make Frozen Pizza Taste Better

Ok, let’s be honest. Frozen pizza is an easy dinner option on a budget, and it doesn’t take a lot of time to unwrap one and pop it in the oven if you are busy. BUT frozen pizza can be bland.

With a few extra steps, I can show you how to take your frozen pizza up a notch with just a few extra ingredients, and one or two extra steps.

What kind of Pizza is Best?

Here is what I ask myself when shopping for frozen pizzas

  1. What is on sale this week? Usually, I find Red Barron brand pizzas on sale a lot, and if you are looking for a good thin-crust option..Red Barron can be good if you doctor it up just a little. This is the brand I tend to go for. I like thin crust, and they are consistent in taste.
  2. What Crust do you prefer? As I mentioned previously, you need to consider the crust options. If you like a thicker crust, Digoirno is a good option BUT at my grocery store, it’s typically in the $10 range. Which to me is A LOT for a frozen pizza.
  3. What is the Price? This is my final, and probably most important consideration when it comes to picking a frozen pizza. Red Barron is usually on sale, and Digorno is almost never on sale (at my store anyway). HOWEVER, there is one pizza brand that I haven’t mentioned yet, that is almost always on sale, and is similar to Red Barron….and that is…Tombstone.

Crispy, golden edges transform a basic frozen pizza into a gourmet masterpiece.

That’s right. Old Faithful. Tombstone pizza. It’s usually around $5 and I think that it is similar to Red Barron. It’s a thin crust, and you don’t have to deal with the pesky cardboard box that doesn’t fit in your recycling can.

For this recipe, I will be making a Tombstone pizza taste better. It will be a challenge but I think I am up to it. If you want to read a New York Times Article about the best-frozen pizzas, you can find that here!

Let’s talk about Toppings

Now, I am a plain old pepperoni girl. I like to keep it simple, so I usually add some extra cheese and pepperonis.

Here are my suggested toppings:

  1. Pepperonis. Just a small package, because they can be expensive. If you are usually happy with the amount of pepperoni or if you don’t like them you can skip this topping.
  2. Cheese. There are two kinds of cheese that I think you could add to your pizza. The Classic Mozzarella, and parmesan. If you want to really splurge, get fresh mozzarella and fancy parmesan cheese that you grate over the pizza but if you don’t the cheese in the bags works great.
  3. Butter. The ultimate way to add extra flavor to your pizza is to make a seasoned butter to paint on the crust, and probably on top of the pizza too…if you are feeling dangerous.
  4. More Sauce. You could also add more sauce, but it might get messy. But if that is what you want to do, GO FOR IT!

Here are some other things you could add as toppings:

  • Tomatoes
  • Ham
  • Different kinds of Cheese
  • Pineapple…
  • Cooked Ground Beef
  • Peppers
  • Onions
  • Olives
  • Cooked Chicken
  • Buffalo Sauce
  • Mushrooms
  • Jalapeños
  • Cooked Bacon

The trick is to balance the salty, and sweet flavors! But it’s your pizza so you can make it however you like!

The Best Way to Cook Frozen Pizza

Let’s talk about cooking methods because there are a couple of options. You could do the traditional cooking method: unwrap the whole pizza, doctor it up, and stick it in the oven for 20ish minutes. That way works great, most people have an oven, and ou get a whole pizza. It’s a tried and true method.

Now, recently, I have seen people online, CUT THE PIZZA INTO SINGLE SERVINGS AND AIR FRY IT. Listen, this was a game-changer for me. I occasionally enjoy a frozen pizza but I can’t eat the whole thing. So why not cut the pizza up into the amount you want and cook that? It’s genius really.

Transforming frozen pizza from a freezer staple to a mouthwatering meal that rivals your favorite pizzeria.

If you are feeding more than one person or don’t have a large enough air fryer, I would choose option one. It works, and you can cook the whole thing.

For this recipe, I am going to cook the pizza in the oven since that is what most people have access to. If you are looking for how to make frozen pizza crispy, the air fryer is a good option. You could also increase the temperature in the oven BUT make sure you keep an eye on the pizza because it could burn.

Frozen Pizza Hacks

Ingredients

  • 1 Frozen Pizza
  • 1/4 cup Melted Butter or Olive Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Dried Italian Herbs
  • 1/4 tsp Garlic Powder
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup Pizza Sauce
  • 2-3 slices Fresh Mozzarella or 1/4 cup Pre-Shredded Cheese
  • 1/4 cup Pepperonis

Instructions

  • Melt butter, and add seasonings of your choice. I used Dried Italian Herbs, Garlic Powder, and Salt and Pepper. Set Aside
  • Add Pizza Sauce, Cheese, and Pepperonis to your frozen pizza. The Order doesn't really matter but I prefer, sauce, cheese, then pepperonis.
  • Using a basting brush, add the melted butter mixture to the crust
  • Bake the pizza according to the package instructions.
  • Remove from oven, let cool for 5 minutes, and serve

Notes

  • You can use any frozen pizza of your choice, I prefer Red Barron because it’s usually on sale, and I prefer a thin crust.
  • You can use Olive Oil in place of the butter
  • Add any extra toppings that you would like!  The sky is the limit.
  • Be mindful of the cooking time, and adding extra toppings, you may need to pre-cook some things or cook the pizza for a few extra minutes in the oven.
  • Fresh herbs will have the best taste but dried herbs work just as well, and are better if you are on a budget!
  • Using fresh mozzarella will be delicious, but any cheese you like will work just fine!  Keep an eye out for sales on Mozzarella in the deli section of your grocery store.
