TIPS AND TRICKS FOR EASY CHERRY COBBLER

  • If you are concerned that the cake mix will be too much then you can always use less. I always use the whole thing  but my husband never puts the whole bag in and so, just go with what you feel is right. Just know that a portion of the powdery cake mix will melt down into the cherry pie filling some and a bit will become crusty with the melted butter.
  • As for the butter pieces on the top therefore here is the thing while I always cut the butter and put it on in the most haphazard manner possible. My sweet hubby, the engineer, always places the pats of butter as if they were soldiers lined up across the powdery cake mix tundra and the results are the same. I don’t think it matters a bit.
  • If you forget to spray your 9×13 pan then don’t sweat it because it just means you will have to scrape the sides of your dish a little bit to get all of the cherry stuff out.
  • I use the cherries that I can in the spring. You can find out about that HERE in my post called “How to Can Cherry Pie Filling”. I think they are much more tasty than the store bought version however, but that is just me. It takes 4 1/2 pint jars of home canned cherries for that. If you take a look at the ingredients of store bought cherry pie filling then you might decide to start canning your own too if you use a lot of cherry pie filling during the year . We do at our house (because Cherries = Love, remember).
  • If you want to make a half sized version of this, you can then just use a small baking dish such as a 2 quart size and half the ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 2 Cans of Cherry Pie Filling
  • 1 Cup of Pecan pieces
  • 1 box of yellow cake mix
  • 1 stick of butter

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350. Spray the bottom and sides of a 9x13 baking dish with non-stick spray. Pour the 2 cans of cherry pie filling into the baking dish and spread out to cover. Sprinkle the pecan pieces over the top.
  • Sprinkle the yellow cake mix over the top of that. Cut the butter into slices and place around the top of the cake mix. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes or until the filling is bubbling up through the top. Some of the cake mix may still look powdery and that is ok.

Notes

  • If you are concerned that the cake mix will be too much then you can always use less.  I always use the whole thing  but my husband never puts the whole bag in and so, just go with what you feel is right.  Just know that a portion of the powdery cake mix will melt down into the cherry pie filling some and a bit will become crusty with the melted butter.
  • You can always add more pecans if you really like more OR leave them out entirely if you don't want them in your cobbler.

Not a fan of the yellow cake dump cakes and I was planning on making some cobbler for Turkey Day in a couple of weeks so I just read the first review by Joe and he said that chocolate cake mix worked well so I will do that plus add some mini chocolate chips instead of the nuts since hubb can't have them and that will be one of the many desserts that I have on our dessert table. Thanks for the recipe!

Made this on a whim because we had some fresh cherries to use up. Didn’t have any pecans, but we did have sliced almonds. Wait.....no yellow cake mix......chocolate is all we had. Oh my goodness, we served this to some new friends and it was the highlight of the entire meal. Thank you for your sharing with us!

Can I use canned cherries instead of pie filling? Thank you!

Tuesday 14th of May 2019

Hi Jackie,

Canned Cherries by themselves will not work for this recipe. You really need to actual cherry pie filling. Pie filling has a thickened sauce and is ready to be made into a pie. Hope this helps! Wendi

I would like to serve at my daughters wedding. Can I make ahead and freeze? What's the best way to do this and serve in wedding day?

Wendi Spraker

Sunday 2nd of September 2018

Hi Teresa! You know what’s funny? I served this at MY wedding exactly 7 years ago tomorrow! I am not sure about freezing it. It doesn’t take but a few minutes to throw together and I would recommend putting it together the day before and putting in the fridge then bake the morning of the wedding. It’s fine to serve room temp.
