A VERSE TO SHARE
This is one of my favorite passages. After Jesus has been crucified, he appeared to the disciples while they were fishing.
Can you imagine, you have just witnessed such a devastating thing and your beloved is dead and gone when suddenly he calls to you from the shore while you are fishing?
Seriously,
I wouldn’t have been able to get to shore quick enough, just like Simon Peter who just jumps in the water and runs!
Can you even imagine what a joyous reunion that was?
And here is the thing that gets me, Jesus had a fire built and a meal fixed with bread and fish. How gracious! He knows that his disciples are grieving and missing him and what does he do? He fixes them a meal. It brings me to tears.
Sometimes fixing a meal is the kindest most loving thing that you can ever do for hurting people. You don’t even have to say a word.
John 21: 4-9
Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.
He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”
“No,” they answered.
He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.”When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

Hi Wendi, thank you for this recipe! It is so helpful to learn a good way to spice up the beans, very good. I didn't use bacon but a sauteed onion (instead of onion powder) and it was still nice a flavorful. I made honey cornbread to go with it! Yummy dinner!

i prefer fresh grated garlic and chopped onions to powders, and lots of fresh chopped herbs, but this is okay, too.
random question -- if the apostles were SO broken up by the agony of the crucifixion, why did they go fishing instead of sitting shiva?

Hi Hollis, I too prefer lots of fresh ingredients, but typically the folks looking at my canned food recipes are looking for ways to doctor up the food with what might be in their pantry and cabinets. Too often this doesn’t include fresh herbs.
Regarding sitting shiva, I can’t really offer anything much, as I’m Christian and not that familiar with Jewish customs.
That said, I’m pretty sure that Jesus predicted that all the disciples would deny him. In fact, I’m pretty sure that with the temperament at the time, they had to deny him or suffer the same. Sitting shiva for him would have identified them as followers that are close enough to be brothers.
So, it’s my total guess that fishing offered a way that they could be together, talk and mourn without anyone overhearing.
If you’ve ever been a fisherman yourself, you’ll understand the great peace that accompanies hanging out by or in the water and waiting for a bite. It really does soothe the soul.
That’s just my own guess. Have a good week and blessings to you.
