I just drain the water, put in a tablespoon of butter and a tiny bit of broth to help with flavor, salt and pepper, and some chopped cilantro. My family *loves* it like this! Hard to find now, except the *huge* can at Walmart. While I buy that when extended family comes, I like the smaller cans for just us.

Thanks Morgan

All my life we have enjoyed hominy and puddin'. It is very popular here in Appalachia and is even offered is some restaurants.
Kat says
@Steve F.,
I have made corn pudding but not Hominy pudding. Is that what you are referring to? Or with pudding mixed together or 2 separate dishes served side by side?
Interesting...!

There is an awesome Mexican soup that uses hominy. pozole https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pozole
Wendi Spraker says
Thanks TB
Sheila says
@TB, Mexican hominy is very different from American hominy. There is an inedible shell, it seems, on the outside of the kernel. If you want to make great pozole, it is best with Bush's white hominy, or yellow, or another American hominy brand (white is chewier, yellow is pastier).

Interesting, I have never heard hominy cooked like this. We always boil the pieces of corn grain from scratch then when tender we add cornmeal or blended green plantain or oats to thicken, coconut milk, condensed milk a litte sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt and vailla. This is the most delicious porridge on earth.
Wendi Spraker says
Hi Carla, Ive never heard of hominy cooked the way you are explaining either. It's good to get a different perspective though. I think it's importqnt to point out that I'm using canned hominy here and not the dried grains or whole corn that isn't cooked yet.
Robin says
Hi peeps .. try putting hominy in chili. I called my sister last night to ask her how she makes it. Ground beef onions peppers cooked add tomatoes beans and chili powder cinnamon (a pinch) salt and pepper. Rinse hominy well and add to chili. Simmer for at least an hour or two. Salt and pepper. O yum.
Sheila says
@Robin, this is great!

I'm from the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch cooking in Western Pennsylvania and grew up with hominy. I boil it with a pinch of red pepper then drain and add it to frying pork chops. Cook it in the pork chop drippings until it is just right. Then serve it with the chops and apple sauce on the side.
Wendi Spraker says
Sounds like the perfect PA Dutch recipe.
ALYRE DOIRON says
I live in New Brunswick Canada and nowhere ca I find Hominy Corn in cans.We used to get it in most COOP stores but no more.I'm craving for it.
Wendi Spraker says
OH that's so sad! I don't know how one would go about finding Hominy in cans other than Amazon maybe? I bet that would be cost prohibitive though.
Carla says
@ALYRE DOIRON, I purchase the dry grains in Mocton a store called Mama's
Wendy says
@ALYRE DOIRON, Try Walmart - that's where we get it in Ottawa, Ontario.

I grew up on canned hominy with only butter the way my mom cooked it. I had a large can of gold hominy and thought I would branch out. I tried your recipe and doubled the ingredients. Let me tell you I nearly ate the whole thing in one sitting! I can't wait to make this again. Thank you
Wendi Spraker says
Oh! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! No harm in eating a whole can!! ๐

Janina says
In the video you added vinegar but it wasn't listed in the written recipe. What does the vinegar do? Thanks!
Wendi Spraker says
Hi Janina, This recipe (and most with canned foods) is very versatile and you can add a little of this and that as needed. The vinegar gives this recipe a nice little added pop. You can give it a little splash (about 1 tsp) and see how it brightens up the flavors of the food).
