Traditional Thanksgiving Stuffing Recipe

Stuffing is one of my personal favorite Thanksgiving side dishes. In my family we add sausage, and boiled eggs to the mix to give it a meaty and hearty flavor.

This recipe is a little bit different than most recipes because of the eggs, and sausage, however, the great thing about sharing these family recipes is that you can leave out or add things that you like or don’t like.

Ingredients for this Stuffing Recipe

Celery and Onion – Celery and onion give this recipe some texture and flavor. I like to to cut them up pretty small so that they cook through faster and I think that it gives a better texture.

Garlic – I put garlic in almost everything and like the celery and onion it gives a flavor boost.

Sausage – Adding sausage to your stuffing recipes gives a meaty flavor that is unmatched. Honestly, I think that it really takes dressing up a level. I prefer Neeses Sausage but you can use whatever kind you like. This is where my family recipe deviates from the other traditional stuffing recipes.

Thyme and Sage – really no Thanksgiving meal is complete without thyme and sage. They are quintessential Thanksgiving herbs. Make sure that you don’t use too much and cut them up pretty small.

French Bread – I wanted to be a little fancy with my bread this year but really any plain, whole-loaf bread will work. I would stay away from sweet breads like brioche.

Chicken stock – using chicken stock to hydrate the bread is a great way to boost flavor.

Boiled Eggs – Adding eggs is another thing that will take your stuffing up a notch. They don’t taste like boiled eggs and really enhance the flavor and texture of the dish.

Salt and Pepper – you have to add just a little salt and pepper!

Notes

  1. I like to use Neeses sausage!  I think that its the best sausage you can get.
  2. Using fresh thyme and sage is great and adds a nice herby taste but you can use dried if you can’t find fresh.
  3. You can add as much celery, and onion as you like!  I don’t care for celery so I only added 1 rib but you can add more or less depending on your taste.
